13 Ways to Attack Secure Remote Access

Speaker: Andrew Ginter, VP Industrial Security, Waterfall Security

Remote access vendors are notoriously opaque as to how their "secure" remote access (SRA) technology actually works. This is counter-productive in a world where the clear majority of practitioners are worried about the security of their SRA solutions. In this presentation we survey the field, digging into how each technology works. We compare each technology to a spectrum of cyber attacks, identifying those attacks each technology does (and does not) defeat with a high degree of confidence, and why, so that practitioners can compare the security of their solutions to credible threats. And we review the latest CISA, NCSC and other guidance for OT SRA in light of these attack scenarios.

Andrew Ginter has been a CUUG member, on and off (mostly on) for decades. His career spanned product development for telecomms, industrial control systems, and for the last two decades, industrial cybersecurity. He is writing his fourth book on that topic, with a working title of A CISO's Guide to OT Security - Reasonable responses to credible threats.
